What is an OMFS?
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon’s (O.M.F.S.’s) are recognized licensed surgical specialists who are required by professional codes of conduct to give up general practice. Surgeons who have M.D. degrees no longer practice general medicine. Similarly, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons who have D.D.S. degrees no longer practice general dentistry.
O.M.F.S.’s complete a 4, 5 or 6 year hospital based surgical residency training program. The residency includes related medical field rotations including; internal medicine, general surgery, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, intensive care, and others. O.M.F.S.’s operate partnered with E.N.T., plastic, orthopedic, general surgeons etc., who are also in training. O.M.F.S.’s have performed a wide variety of operations such as laser surgery, skin surgery, hand surgery, removal of gal bladders, limb amputations, bone grafts from the hips and legs, tracheotomies, cancer excision, liposuction, face lifts, nose jobs, breast surgery etc.
At the conclusion of their demanding program, O.M.F.S.’s are well-prepared to perform the full scope of their specialty. Which encompasses the diagnosis and emergency/surgical management of diseases, injuries and defects that involve the functional and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, head, neck and facial regions. Included are such things as draining serious infections, suturing skin lacerations, ear reconstructions, rebuilding broken nose, jaw, sinus, forehead, cheek and eye socket bones etc., moving chins, jaws, noses, cheeks etc., to create good facial esthetics and improve speech and chewing.
O.M.F.S.’s have the same privileges and responsibilities as other surgeons. Including medical society membership, hospital emergency room call, operating in the O.R., ordering and interpreting medical tests and x-rays, and caring for all the medical needs of their hospitalized patients. O.M.F.S.’s perform procedures covered by both medical and/or dental codes and insurance.
Modern O.M.F.S practice nation wide includes such things as hair transplants, facial cosmetic surgery, jaw alignment surgery, oral/head/neck and facial tumor biopsy and removal, laser skin rejuvenation and lesion removal, scar revision surgery, trauma reconstruction, oral/dental/facial implant placement, wisdom tooth extractions, botox injections etc.
O.M.F.S.’s are also hospital trained anesthesiologists. Our anesthesia / emergency training and office facilities are the same as any ambulatory surgery center. The administration of anesthetics to eliminate pain has a long history among O.M.F.S. anesthetists. Dental health care providers were the first to inject local anesthetics and use nitrous oxide “laughing gas”. Hospital based dental professionals delivered the world’s first “knock out” inhaled gas general anesthetics. O.M.F.S.’s routinely, competently and safely administer office anesthesia to all types of patients.
Intra-venous sedation has become a standard method of caring for patients who require tooth removal, implant placement, lesion biopsy, drainage of infection etc., in the oral and maxillofacial region (mouth, head, neck and face). Office based surgery with sedation anesthesia is often the most efficient and cost effective way to perform procedures while maintaining maximum patient comfort and safety.
Patients who visit their family dentist, family physician or the emergency room with complaints of pain or dysfunction in the oral and maxillofacial region are often referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (O.M.F.S.) for treatment.
