Bone Grafting
Over time, the jawbone atrophies and shrinks. When this happens, the quality and quantity of the bone may not be suitable for placement of oral/dental implants. Through natural or synthetic bone grafting, we now have the ability to grow bone where needed. With a successful bone graft procedure, we are able to place proper length and width implants. It also gives us a chance to restore chewing ability, a natural smile and restore facial appearance.
If you wait more than a year after the removal of a tooth before placing an implant, it is more likely you will have lost enough bone to require some type of bone graft.
Most adults will need a sinus lift bone graft to place implants in the back of the upper jaw. Sinus lift grafts are routine and very successful. Synthetic or human processed bone is usually used. Your own bone can be used if you prefer, but is usually not necessary.
If you need to add bone to widen your jaw for implants, it is often done with the patients own bone. It is transferred from one spot of your jaw to another. This is often necessary when placing implants in the front of the upper and lower jaws.
Once you loose vertical bone height in your jaw, it is very difficult to get back with grafting. Special techniques can be tried. Fortunately, implants can usually be successfully placed even though you may have lost some vertical bone height.
You will always be given a choice of which graft you will receive in case you have objections to synthetic bone, or human processed bone, or want to avoid taking bone from you own jaw.
